Local activities planned during April to raise awareness about sexual asault.
Nearly one in five women in the US has experienced rape or attempted rape at some time in their lives, while one in 67 American men has experienced rape or attempted rape.
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Communities Overcoming Violent Encounters (COVE) has several activities planned in the area to raise awareness.
The following are events in Oceana, Mason and Lake counties:
– April 2: National Day of Action for Sexual Assault Awarness Month, Ludington Pizza Hut 4-8 p.m., 10 percent of proceeds donated to COVE.
– April 4: The Hof in Free Soil, Karaoke Night, 6-10 p.m. with donation to COVE .
– April 11: Lake County Walk for Awareness and Benefit in partnership with Lake County Crime Victims Awareness Week and Pompeii’s Pizza in Baldwin. Walk begins at 4:30 p.m. Meet at Lake-Osceola Bank in Baldwin. Walk ends at Pompeii’s Pizza with a portion of pizza sales to benefit COVE.
– April 12: Sand Bar in Ludington, Drag Show 6-9 p.m. with donation to COVE.
– April 16: Big Hart Brewing Trivia Night 7-9 p.m. with donation to COVE.
– April 18: Oceana County Proclamation at Oceana County Courthouse by Judge Bradley Lambrix in conjunction with Oceana County Child Abuse Prevention Month. Walk for Awareness following reading of proclamation at noon.
– April 20, Doc’s Sauble River Inn in Free Soil, 5-9 pm with donation benefit to COVE.
– April 24: Mason County Walk for Awareness in partnership with Community Mental Health, the Health Department and the Department of Health and human Services. Walk begins at 3:30 p.m. at Mason County CMH located at 920 Diana Street, Ludington.
– April 26: Deb’s Café in Shelby, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Awareness for COVE services.
– April 27: Johnny’s Roadhouse in Custer Music Benefit for COVE. Yesterday’s Wine 2-6 p.m. with $5 cover charge donated to COVE; 7-8:30 p.m. free line dancing; and GlowTube, 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with $5 cover charge donated to COVE.
