VICTORY TOWNSHIP, Mason County – The criminal justice classes at the West Shore Educational Service District Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) are competing in the S4SD (Strive 4 a Safer Drive) campaign sponsored by Ford Driving Skills for Life and the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.
S4SD is a teen driving initiative aimed at reducing serious traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities among Michigan’s most inexperienced drivers – teens. Participating schools receive $1,000 to develop and implement a student-led, peer-to-peer traffic safety awareness campaign.
This year, students will focus on increasing safety belt usage among their peers and the community. Students will provide educational presentations to the entire CTE student body, create a web site, YouTube video, billboard and hold several events to promote seat belt usage and educate about the dangers of not wearing a seat belt.
Students will hold an event at the CTE Wednesday, Feb. 27, that will include a seat belt convincer machine. Michigan State Police Trooper Todd Goodrich of the Hart post will be on hand to operate the machine and talk to students. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. on the campus of West Shore Community College, 300 North Stiles Rd., near Scottville.
Students will have a booth at the Mason County Central Family Affair event March 16. Students will have contact with over 300 students, parents and community members. They will educate the community on seat belt safety and also have games, prizes and a raffle to encourage greater participation.
The students received many generous donations from local businesses to help support the campaign, which are listed at: www.wsesdcte.org/cj.
