HART — A 45-year-old Spring Lake man faces two misdemeanor charges in connection to the death of a motorcyclist and the injuries suffered by another motorcyclist stemming from a July 28, 2018 crash in Grant Township.

Jeremy Gene Velik, of 2020 Pontaluna Rd., is charged with moving violation causing death, which is punishable by up to one year in jail, and moving violation causing serious impairment, which is punishable by up 93 days in jail, said Oceana County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Chad DeRouin.

Tanya Lynn Monroe, 41, of Muskegon was riding a motorcycle with her husband in the late afternoon when the crash occurred. She died Aug. 10. Chris Monroe, 57, was seriously injured, DeRouin said. “He spent a significant amount of time in the hospital.”

The crash occurred on Winston Road near the US 31 Expressway near Rothbury.

The couple was westbound on Winston Road when Velik, who was eastbound in a pickup truck, apparently attempted to make a left turn into the entrance of the Lucky Lake Campground and into the path of the motorcycle, according to the Michigan State Police.

Velik is scheduled to appear in Oceana County’s 78th District Court for a pretrial Jan. 31 at 10:30 a.m. His bail was set at $5,000/10 percent.
