Markiewicz memorial donates $13,400 to Oceana schools.
SHELBY – The David P. Markiewicz Memorial Fund was founded and joined the Community Foundation for Oceana County in 2013. This fund was started by the family of the late David Markiewicz, a 2005 Shelby High School graduate who loved music.
“Music was the thread that weaved through David’s life and connected himself with others,” said David’s father, Bob Markiewicz. “The Markiewicz family goal is to continue this passion for music and to help open opportunities for kids in Oceana county schools so they can have the opportunity to learn the language and art of music.”
The David P. Markiewicz Memorial Fund distributes the money by purchasing music education equipment and materials and providing endowments.
Music programs in Oceana County schools will benefit from grants totaling $13,400. Proceeds are from the Sixth Annual David Markiewicz Memorial Scramble held last fall at the Oceana Golf Club in Shelby.
Six Oceana County schools, with a total of 11 music programs, that will benefit include: Hart Public Schools; Shelby Public Schools; Pentwater Public Schools; Walkerville Public Schools; New Era Christian School; and Oceana Christian School.
“The Markiewicz family is thankful to all the volunteers, sponsors, and golfers who have made this event successful. It takes a lot of hard work and effort from many people to make this happen. It is because of the generosity of our sponsors and volunteers who gave of their time and donors who contributed silent auction items to make this a successful event,” Markiewicz said.
