A fundraising page has been established to help with medical expenses for John Fishel, 34, of Hart, who was injured on Thursday, Oct. 25, after being struck by a car while he was helping load his child on a school bus.
According to the fundraising page, which can be viewed here, Fishel suffered several injuries and is in stable but critical condition at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
The crash occurred about 7:10 a.m. just east of North Oceana Drive near the driveway to Highlander Trailer Park.
Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said a Hart Public Schools bus had been stopped at that location on the south side fo the road with its flashers operating, loading kids on the bus.
“As the kids were being loaded on the bus, the driver spoke briefly with a parent/pedestrian about the schedule to drop the kids off as today is scheduled to be a half day of school.”
As Fishel stepped away from the bus to cross the road, he was struck by a car driven by a 16-year-old Hart girl, who was passing the bus while its flashers were activated, Mast said.
Fishel was initially transported by Life EMS ambulance to Mercy Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby and then was transported by helicopter to Grand Rapids.
Fishel is the father of three children.
