HART – A 36-year-old man was sentenced to one year in jail Monday, Oct. 22, for failure to register as a sex offender.

Clarence Fredrick Cowles, whose address is listed with the court as 1355 Baseline Rd. Shelby, has been convicted of failing to register six times.

Cowles is illiterate and cannot read the SORA (sex offender registration act) paperwork, said his attorney Terrry Shaw. But he will “make it a priority” to get the forms filled out with the assistance of his wife, Shaw said.

After he is released from jail, he will live with his wife in Grand Rapids, said Shaw. His underlying offense was a long time ago, he added.

“You could have gone to prison,” said Judge Robert D. Springstead, who gave Cowles credit for 106 days served in jail. Cowles has served a year in jail on a couple other occasions for failing to register. “Make it a priority,” the judge said.

Cowles’ underlying offense was committed when he was a juvenile, Bizon said.
