NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP – A fire Monday evening, Oct. 22, destroyed a garage at 7673 E. Loop Rd. near Hesperia, but the firefighters’ quick actions saved the nearby home.
Firefighters from Hesperia, Ferry Township and Fremont battled the blaze. The detached garage contained a wood stove, which may have caused the fire, said Hesperia Fire Chief Bob Eichenberg.
The home and garage are rental property owned by Bob McDonell, Eichenberg said. It was not immediately known if the property is insured.
The house sustained exterior damage and light smoke damage inside, the chief said.
The garage contained a tractor and some building supplies that were also destroyed, he said. One of the two residents was home and called 911 at 4:45 p.m.
When firefighters arrived, the garage was fully engulfed in flames.
Life EMS also responded to the scene. No one was injured.
