SHELBY – The Community Foundation for Oceana County announces that its scholarship program is now accepting applications for 2019-2020 school year.

The foundation awards over $220,000 in scholarships to both graduating high school seniors and current college students in new and renewed scholarships each year. The online application deadline is Feb. 1, 2019.

Applications are submitted electronically through the community foundation website, www.oceana-foundation.org/scholarships. The application process has been streamlined into three easy steps for students and families. Scholarship applications are managed through a “single general application” method. Each application is reviewed and matched with the best-fitting scholarship sources.

The community foundation does not make awards solely on the basis of need. Academic achievement, community involvement, extra-curricular activities, and financial need are all taken into consideration. Many scholarships were created by donors for specific colleges, fields of study or to support skilled trades training. All community foundation scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis.

Students will be notified of scholarship awards in April of 2019 and will be recognized at their high school awards ceremonies. Current college students will be notified by mail in June of 2019.

“Because of the generosity of our donors, we are able to support Oceana County students in accessing educational and training opportunities beyond high school,” said Tammy Carey, foundation executive director. “This is an important investment in our community and we hope that many of these young adults return to Oceana County to live, work and give back to the community that invested in them.”

The foundation envisions an Oceana where everyone has access to resources to thrive. It receives and manages contributions from citizens and organizations and has provided $5.2 million in grants and scholarships back to the community since 1989. More information can be obtained by calling Carey at 231-861-8335, logging onto www.oceana-foundation.org, or following the Facebook page.
