Power outage causes sewage spill.
SHELBY – A power outage on Industrial Drive in the Village of Shelby caused a sewer spill at a lift station Friday, Sept. 21, according to a press release issued by Village Administrator Rob Widigan.
“As a result, for approximately one hour, wastewater overflowed at the lift station. The outage was discovered right away, and the Shelby Department of Public Works crew was able to keep the spill contained within dikes.
“Public works staff worked to clean up the area and was able to pump a majority of the wastewater back into the lift station. The remaining wastewater was absorbed by sand applied to the site and will be removed accordingly. Sampling protocol is being followed under the direction of the Oceana County Health Department. Public works staff is also working in collaboration with the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and the Oceana County Health Department.
“We were able to respond quickly to the incident to clean up the affected area,” said Widigan. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We’re also investigating what caused the power outage.
“The latest information will be posted at shelbyvillage.com as it becomes available. Residents with questions about the spill are asked to call 231-861-4401.”
