SHELBY — Shayne Chris Smith, 30, of Hesperia escaped police custody at Mercy Health Lakeshore Campus Sunday night after being arrested by the Hesperia Police Department, said Lt. Shane Hasty of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

As of 1:15 p.m. Monday, Aug, 27, Smith remains at large, Hasty said.

“On Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at approximately 8:30 p.m., an arrested male escaped from the custody of the arresting officer from the Village of Hesperia Police Department. The suspect had been arrested on outstanding warrants. While being transported, he complained of a medical issue and was taken to Mercy Hospital Lakeshore Campus in Shelby, Michigan. After being seen by staff, he was able to escape the officer when being transported back to the cruiser. He took off running and is still at large. He is not an inmate from the Oceana County Jail.”

Smith is described as approximately 5’ 6” 170 pounds, long hair with facial hair/beard. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, gray jogging shorts, no shoes or socks. He is handcuffed in the front, according to the Shelby Police Department’s Facebook post.

Anyone with information or who has seen Smith should call 911 immediately.
