NEWFIELD TOWNSHIP — A fire destroyed an abandoned house at 8591 E. Yonker Road near Hesperia Monday morning, Aug. 27.

The Hesperia Area Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 8:37 a.m., said Hesperia Fire Chief Bob Eichenberg. Assisting were Ferry Township and Walkerville fire departments. Shelby-Benona and Fremont fire departments were also called to assist but then called off.

Large flames were shooting from the fully-engulfed one-story house when firefighters first arrived, Eichenberg said. It appeared there were several contents inside the home that were also destroyed.

“Nobody has been here for awhile,” the chief said. It was not immediately known who owned the house or how the fire started.

Also assisting at the scene were Oceana County EMS and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

No one was injured.
