SHELBY — Cherries and fuel spilled onto Oceana Drive just north of the Shelby Public Schools campus Saturday, July 21, at approximately 10:15 a.m. after a semi truck hauling the tart cherries and a 2006 Jeep collided head-on, according to Michigan State Police Trooper Brittany Johnson.

Oceana Drive from Buchanan Road to Sixth Street is expected to be shut down for the next few hours as emergency crews clean up the spill. Hazmat from Muskegon was called in for the fuel leak, which came from the semi truck’s gas tank.

Drivers of both vehicles were transported by Oceana County EMS to Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus in Muskegon for non-life-threatening injuries, Johnson said. Both vehicles were driven by men, but their ages and hometowns were not immediately available. Johnson said the semi truck, which rolled onto its side following the crash, was northbound on Oceana Drive, and the Jeep was southbound, Johnson said.

Firefighters from the Shelby-Benona and Hart Area departments responded quickly to the scene as they were performing driving training in the high school parking lot, firefighters on scene said.

Also responding to the scene were the Shelby Police Department and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, assisting with traffic.

Oceana County Emergency Management Coordinator James Duram was also called to the scene.

No other information was immediately available.
