GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP — A 22-year-old White Cloud man, who was driving distracted, caused a rear-end collision with a tractor and plow Wednesday, July 4.

The crash occurred about 3:14 p.m. on Maple Island Road near Arthur Road, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. Hunter Dalton Bennett was driving a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on Maple Island Road. According to a sheriff’s office report, Bennett was using his cell phone and then dropped the phone. As he went to pick up the phone, his vehicle was traveling up a hill, and he apparently then hit the rear-end of a John Deere 4430 tractor pulling an implement, driven by Richard Kenneth Kokx, 65, of Fremont.

The Grand Prix spun out of control and then overturned, according to the report. The tractor, which did not have a slow moving vehicle sign or flashing lights on, was rendered disabled.

Neither Bennett nor Kokx were injured as a result of the crash. Bennett was found at fault for careless/negligent driving.
