GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A 42-year-old Dearborn man drowned in Silver Lake Sunday afternoon. Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast has identified the victim as Rabih T. Othman. Mast said the drowning occurred on the north end of Silver Lake about 3:31 p.m.
“Mr. Othman and his group were deploying a tube from a boat into Silver Lake when they lost control of the tube and Mr. Othman began to struggle in the water,” Mast said. “The group that Mr. Othman was with attempted to get to his location but was unable to get to him.
“A different boat that had local residents on it was also in the area, and those men made a very brave effort to save Mr. Othman.”
Mast said a 19-year-old Hart man saw Othman struggling and jumped in with a boat cushion floatation device in an attempt to save the victim. The Hart man was able to hold Othman up until a jet ski pulling a rescue float was able to get to them.
“Mr. Othman was loaded on the rescue float and taken to shore where resuscitation efforts continued.
He was then transported to Mercy Health Lakeshore Campus hospital in Shelby where he was eventually pronounced dead, Mast said.
Othman was not wearing a personal floatation device, Mast said.
