HART — Two of the 16 men criminally charged in connection to a deadly cockfighting ring in Hart Township earlier this month were sentenced this week in 78th District Court on a reduced charge of disorderly person – gambling.
Jesus Magana, 73, and Jesus Arnulfo Magana, 32, both of Grant, Michigan, pleaded “no contest” to the misdemeanor charge Monday, June 25, and were sentenced to 90 days discretionary jail, which is a probationary term, and a $75 fine.
The pair were facing a felony charge of animals – attending a fight in connection to the cockfighting ring at 1811 N. 72nd Ave.
Both of them are placed on federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers because their immigration status is under review.
The felony charge of animals – attending a fight is punishable by up to four years in prison and not being allowed to own an animal for up five years.
Ten dead roosters were found in a pit, and police confiscated razor spurs that were attached to the roosters’ feet and vials of injectable stimulant used to make the chickens more aggressive. Several of the birds had cuts from the razors. Police found 35 live roosters that were either in pens or actively fighting in the woods.
Several suspects attempted to flee from the police in the densely wooded area.
A total of 16 vehicles on private property were impounded from the scene.
– Jesus Arnulfo Magana’s mugshot was not available.
