Construction zone crash caused by passed out driver.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A single vehicle crash in the construction zone on northbound US 31 Thursday was caused by the driver passing out, according to a report from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.

The driver, a 67-year-old Manistee man, told deputies that he recalls slowing down prior to entering a construction lane shift, and then he either blacked out or fell asleep. When he awoke, his 2015 Kia Optima SUV went off the roadway to the left and struck a construction barrel and a sign. The vehicle came to a rest in the median.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was treated for his injuries on scene by Oceana County EMS, but was not seek further medical assistance.

The sign was a trailered construction lane shift sign owned by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
