HART TOWNSHIP — A 2010 Dodge Avenger driven by a 34-year-old Pentwater man hit two power poles on West Tyler Road near 72nd Avenue Saturday, May 19, at 12:40 a.m., according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

The Avenger “was westbound at a high rate of speed when it lost control; went off the roadway to the left; rolled into a ditch; broke two utility poles; and landed on its top,” the report states.

The driver initially left the accident scene but then turned himself in to authorities, who arrested him for repeat-offense driving while license suspended, failure to report an accident and domestic violence, said Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast. The report stated that alcohol was a suspected factor in the crash.

The driver told police that a possum ran out in front of his vehicle on the rain-slicked road, causing him to lose control of the car, Mast said.

He was treated at the scene by Oceana County EMS, but was not hospitalized, according to the report. It is unknown if he was wearing a seatbelt.
