CRYSTAL TOWNSHIP — A 63-year-old man with Alzheimer’s, who was missing in the woods for several hours Wednesday night March 28, was found thanks to the man’s “smart and loyal canine companion,” according to the Michigan State Police.
“While searching for the man, troopers noticed a dog with a leash on the side of the road,” states an MSP, Hart post, press release. “The dog matched the description of the dog that the man left home with. The dog looked to be trying to the lead the troopers into the woods. The dog waited for the troopers to approach before leading them to the missing subject, who had fallen a short distance into the woods and could not get up on his own.”
According to dispatch information, the man was not properly dressed for the cold weather and did not have on a coat or jacket. His wife called 911 to report him missing.
The man had left his home to go for a walk with this dog, the press release states. “After several hours, the man did not return home.”
A state police K9 assisted in the search for the man, as well as the Crystal Township Fire Department.
The search area was in the vicinity of Madison Road and North 128th Avenue, according to dispatch information.
The man, who was located just after midnight, was found in “good health,” said Sgt. Adam Clement. He was treated by Oceana County EMS and returned home.
