PENTWATER — Members of the Pentwater Women’s Club are actively preparing for the club’s annual ‘Wine and Art by the Water Scholarship Benefit,’ set for Sunday, May 20, from 2-5 p.m. at the Pentwater Yacht Club on Dover Street.

Members are currently seeking items for silent auction, and Hansen Foods in Hart will coordinate the wine tasting. Over 30 wines from Hansen Foods will again be featured for tasting. Shelby State Bank of Pentwater, Fifth Third Bank of Hart, and West Shore Bank of Ludington sponsor the event.

The cost of tickets for the event, which is the club’s only fundraiser, remains the same as it has been for the past 12 years – $20 in advance or $25 at the door. Tickets will be available by this Sunday, April 1, at Hansen Foods in Hart and at Jilly’s Gallery, the Petri Gallery, and the Pentwater Fair Trade Company all on Hancock Street in Pentwater. All of money raised goes to scholarships.

The Women’s Club, a non-profit group first organized 119 years ago, continues its philanthropic endeavors with this spring’s wine tasting and silent auction. The club’s ways and means committee, chaired by Vicki Poplstein, is busy during the winter mobilizing volunteer members who organize the annual project. With the help of area merchants, the Women’s Club has provided more than 160 scholarships for local high school students to continue their higher education.

Last year, the group was able to award seven scholarships to area students. In addition, the women have provided more than a dozen annual scholarships to West Shore Community College students, and have distributed seven memorial scholarships for higher education.

The wine tasting is one of the first social events of the season. Participants enjoy vistas of Pentwater Lake at the Yacht Club, plates of gourmet hors d’ oeuvres, a silent auction of over 200 items, and wine tasting of over 35 wines.
