SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 45-year-old Shelby woman is accused of embezzling over $35,000 from the Marathon gas station on Shelby Road, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

Store manager Angela Smith faces a felony charge of embezzlement $20,000 or more, which is punishable by up to 15 years in prison.

“On Tuesday Jan. 2, a deputy from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the Shelby Marathon Station located at 4252 West Shelby Road in Shelby Township for a possible embezzlement complaint,” states a press release from the sheriff. “The deputy took statements from the owner and his wife, in which they believe their store had suffered a loss of over $35,000 by embezzlement. The store owner believed their store manager was responsible for this theft.

“After further investigation, the deputy determined that a large amount of cash, lottery tickets, and some other food items were indeed missing. After an interview with the suspect, she was arrested. The arrested suspect in this incident was Angela Smith, 45 from Shelby. She has been charged by the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office with embezzlement by an agent of $20,000 or more, which is a 15-year felony. Ms. Smith has been arraigned on this charge, and her bond is currently set at $5,000 cash/surety.”
