WEARE TOWNSHIP — A one-and-a-half story home at 9098 80th Avenue near Pentwater owned by Montague Police Officer Tom Walicki received extensive smoke and fire damage following a fire early Sunday morning, Oct. 15, according to Hart Fire Chief Jack White.

“It appears to have started in the laundry room and spread to the kitchen,” White said.

Residents were inside the house when the fire started, but they safely evacuated unharmed, the chief said.

Walicki’s house is not insured, White said. The chief said he is working to establish financial assistance through the Crystal Valley Care Fund. The family declined assistance through the American Red Cross, he said.

The home is located north of Murphy’s Tavern on the east side of the road. Firefighters from Pentwater, Crystal Township and Mason County’s Riverton Township assisted the Hart Area Fire Department at the scene. The fire was dispatched at approximately 6 a.m.

A fundraising page to assist the family is on http://youcaring.com.

A voicemail message left at the Montague Police Department, inquiring about fundraising efforts to assist the Walicki family, was not immediately returned. OCP will provide updates when available.
