SHELBY TOWNSHIP — A 40-year-old Grand Haven man was transported by ambulance to an area hospital after he fell asleep behind the wheel Tuesday night, Oct. 3, and the 2001 Subaru Legacy he was driving hit a tree and caught fire on southbound US 31 near Shelby Road, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.
The man “fell asleep and left the roadway to the right,” states the report. “He went for approximately 150 off the road before the driver hit a tree head-on. The vehicle started on fire and had to be put out by the firefighters.”
Drugs and alcohol were not factors in the 9:55 p.m. crash, according to the report.
