GRANT TOWNSHIP — Did someone spill the beans? Not exactly, but a semi truck hauling a full load of soy meal tipped over on northbound US 31 just south of the New Era exit, dumping the soy bean product onto the roadway and into the ditch Monday, Sept. 25.

Michigan State Police Trooper Owen McGuigan said the semi driver, a 71-year-old Indiana woman, was not injured.

“She went off the road and shoulder and then tried to get back on,” McGuigan said. When she attempted to get back on the road, the Volvo semi tipped over on the east side of the expressway.

It was not immediately known how much the load weighed. Police and firefighters were shoveling the remaining soy out of the trailer before the semi was towed from the scene. Emergency crews had the right lane closed in the vicinity of the crash.

McGuigan said he believes the woman was wearing her seat belt. He did not immediately have information as to where she was headed with the load. No citations were issued.

Assisting MSP were the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, Grant Township Fire Department and Oceana County EMS.

The crash was dispatched at approximately 8:30 a.m.
