PENTWATER TOWNSHIP — A 21-year-old Pentwater man was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police and leaving the scene of an accident after leading police on a high-speed chase early Sunday morning, Sept. 24, that ended with his vehicle crashing into Pentwater Lake, according to Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast.

The man managed to get out of his vehicle after it went into the water and flee the scene, Mast said. However, deputies later found him at his Pentwater Village residence and arrested him. A second suspect, who is a 22-year-old Mears man, has also been arrested for lying to a police officer in connection to the incident, he said.

The second suspect was attempting to conceal the whereabouts of the first suspect, he said.

The chase began when a sheriff’s deputy observed the Pentwater man driving carelessly on Monroe Road at 12:30 a.m., Mast said. The man also drove down Longbridge and Ridge roads at a high rate of speed.

Blood has been drawn to determine if the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
