GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — Labor Day Weekend was a busy one for the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office as deputies responded to four separate crashes involving minor injuries at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes ORV area of the Silver Lake State Park. Two of the crashes were rollovers.

The first crash occurred Sunday, Sept. 3, at 11:05 a.m. when a 37-year-old Hastings man driving a 2010 Long Travel dune buggy “crested a dune/hill too fast” and “became airborne,” states the OCSO accident report. “When his dune buggy landed, it impacted the sand forcefully,” injuring the man’s back. He was wearing a seatbelt, the report states.

The second crash occurred Monday, Sept. 4, at 12:30 p.m. in the “South Flats” area of the dunes. The driver of a Parrot’s Landing rental Jeep Wrangler “bottomed out” on a small hill, causing a back injury for the backseat passenger. The driver was a 53-year-old Schaumburg, Illinois man, according to the accident report. The injured passenger was a 27-year-old Chicago man. Also riding in the Jeep was a 42-year-old Chicago man.

Crash #3 occurred Monday at 1:30 p.m. also in the “South Flats.” The driver of a 2007 Yamaha YFZ450 quad told police she lost control of the quad after hitting a small sand hill. The quad overturned and ran over the driver, a 22-year-old Belmont woman, injuring her head. The report narrative did not indicate if she was wearing a helmet, although her injuries were listed as minor. She was not transported by ambulance.

The fourth crash of the weekend occurred Monday at 3:15 p.m. on “the third hill south of Test Hill,” according to the sheriff’s office accident report. The driver of a Wild Bill’s rental 2017 Polaris RZR told police he “crested the hill too fast” and the vehicle “went airborne.” When the RZR landed, it overturned causing damage and injuring a passenger. The injured passenger was a 23-year-old Kalamazoo woman.
