HART TOWNSHIP — A single-story home with a full basement at 597 W. Polk Rd. is totally destroyed after a fire ripped through it Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 6.

No humans were injured, but some pets inside likely perished.

The home, owned by Gina Mead, is insured. “I attended a funeral this afternoon, and when I came home, this is what I found,” Mead said as she pointed to her destroyed home.

The fire was dispatched at 2:38 p.m. Firefighters from Hart Area, Shelby-Benona and Walkerville departments battled the blaze.

“Flames were rolling out the windows, and the house was fully engulfed,” said Hart Assistant Fire Chief Dwight Fuehring. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze.

Mead’s house cat was not accounted for at the time this article was written. It is a female 15-pound gray and white cat named Alex. It was inside the house when it caught fire. Her other pets, a hedge hog and Guinea pig, likely died.

The American Red Cross was called to assist Mead, and a fire investigator from the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene to determine the cause.

Oceana County EMS and the Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.
