HART — A 30-year-old Hart woman pleaded guilty in 27th Circuit Court Monday, Aug. 14, to larceny in a building, testifying that she stole coins and jewelry valued at over $3,000 from a woman she was caring for as a home health care worker.
Ashley Ann Smith, of 207 E. Jefferson St., testified that she committed the crime last May in Hart Township.
Smith’s case will be placed on a 10-month deferral, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. If she successfully completes the terms of the deferral, then she can withdraw her plea to the felony and plead to a misdemeanor of larceny $200-$1,000. Smith will be on a supervised deferral and must pay the full amount of her $3,135 in restitution within the 10-month time frame.
Smith testified before Judge Robert D. Springstead that she cashed in the coins at a bank and then sold the jewelry at a pawn shop.
Sentencing is set for Oct. 9 at 9:30 a.m.
