HART — A 46-year-old man who testified in 27th Circuit Court Monday, July 31, that he accessed his wife’s Facebook account in Walkerville last April with the intent to humiliate her faces serving up to 90 days in jail.

Travis Allen Quist, of 8213 Willard Rd., Millington, Michigan, pleaded guilty to a felony of computers – unauthorized use. According to Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon, Quist and his wife were going through a divorce and he changed her Facebook profile information with “the intent to humiliate.” He changed her profile photo to an old picture in which she appeared “partially unclothed” and “that was not intended to be published,” the prosecutor said.

Quist also changed her profile name and description that put his spouse in an “unflattering” or “disparaging” light, Bizon said.

Quist was arrested June 4 by the Michigan State Police for computers – unauthorized use and a misdemeanor of intentional dissemination of sexually-explicit visual material, according to court records. He was arrested the following day by the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office for a felony of carrying a concealed weapon, according to court records.

He testified Monday that he was carrying a concealed firearm in his vehicle.

In exchange for his guilty plea to the computer offense, the other two counts were dismissed. The plea deal also calls for Quist forfeiting his gun. The prosecution agrees to cap his jail time at the midpoint of his sentencing guidelines, which are 0-6 months. The maximum penalty for the crime is five years in prison, said Judge Robert D. Springstead.

Quist will receive a discretionary jail term and probation, the judge said.

The incident occurred April 30, 2017 in the Village of Walkerville, he testified. He told Springstead he couldn’t remember what the Facebook account was altered to say, but admitted that he used “disparaging remarks.”

Sentencing is set for Sept. 25 at 9:30 a.m.
