ESD offering free summer camps for students.

West Shore Educational Service District’s Career Technology Education programs are working with local schools to host free summer camps in late June. Each camp is designed to give students a project-based learning environment and expose them to potential career fields.

Agriscience Everywhere: June 19 – 22

Grades 5-8, Pentwater High School

Students should get ready to get their hands dirty as they will dig into how biotechnology, chemistry and ecology impact agriculture and food production. The week will include hands on labs that require teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. On the final day, students will be invited to spend the day at West Shore Community College’s Tech Center where they will explore the Career and Technical Education facility which will include greenhouse activities, interaction with livestock, and pond ecology.

Get Pumped Up: June 27 – 30

Grades 7-10, Hart Middle School

Students will learn about the inner workings of the heart and cardiovascular system. They will have the opportunity to see and feel how the heart pumps blood, how the lungs exchange gases, and how blood is involved in both. Students will also have the opportunity explore heart and health careers, in addition to learning basic life saving skills like using an EpiPen and performing chest compressions.

Hip 2B STEAM: June 27 – 30

Grades 6-8, Baldwin Jr. High/High School

Student will spend three days exploring logic puzzles, solving problems and creating a “machine”.  The fourth day they will travel to West Shore Community College’s Tech Center to explore some 3D modeling software and 3D printing technologies. Students will also get an opportunity to try their hand at piloting an underwater submarine.

Explorations in Science: June 27 – 30

Grades 6-8, Mason County Eastern

Students will spend a day on engineering design, a day on life sciences and then a day exploring chemical reactions. Students will wrap up the week out at West Shore Community College’s Tech Center where they will run the mechatronic submarine and work together to solve an “escape room” where the focus will be on collaboration and critical thinking skills.

Summer camps are free to participate. Registration is required and space is limited. To register for any of the CTE Summer Camps, contact Jeanne Miller at the West Shore ESD by calling 231.898.1541 or via email at jmiller@wsesd.org.
