HART — A fire Sunday morning, May 21, ripped through a two-story house at 515 Union Street near Wood Street, causing extensive damage.
No one was home at the time the fire ignited, and no one was injured, said Hart Area and Shelby-Benona Fire Chief Jack White.
The fire was dispatched at approximately 10:30 a.m., and when firefighters arrived on scene, flames were shooting out the kitchen window, White said. The fire then spread upstairs into the attic.
White said the fire started in the kitchen, but it was not immediately known how the fire started. A fire investigator was on scene.
The kitchen received “extensive damage,” White said, and the rest of the house sustained smoke and heat damage. It was not immediately known if the house could be salvaged or if it is a total loss.
The house is owned by Daniel Whalen and it is insured, said police on scene.
There was a total of 25 firefighters on scene from Hart Area, Shelby-Benona and Pentwater departments, the chief said. Also on scene were Oceana County EMS, the Hart Police Department and the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office.
Grant Township Fire Department, which filled in for Shelby-Benona, was called to a 30-gallon fuel spill at the Marathon gas station on Shelby Road near the US 31 expressway in Shelby Township at the same time Shelby firefighters were on scene of the house fire in Hart.
No other information was immediately available.
