SHELBY — The Shelby Police Department is urging residents to keep their cars and homes locked due to a recent surge in break-ins, particularly vehicles. The police department also has a strong message for juvenile offenders in the village, as officers crack down on curfew violators.
“Lately, we here in the Village of Shelby have been having numerous breaking and entering complaints of cars and vehicles and juvenile complaints of fighting and curfew,” said Sgt. Josh Karafa. If citizens see anything suspicious, they are advised to call Mason-Oceana Central Dispatch at 231-869-5858.
“The Village of Shelby Police Department will not tolerate these sort of incidents,” Karafa said. “As of now, we will have ‘zero tolerance’ when it comes to this. If any juvenile is caught past curfew, they will be cited. We will also be stepping up patrols in order to curb this recent influx of crimes.”
The curfew for the village is no person under the age of 17 can be out past 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, no person under the age of 17 can be out past midnight, the sergeant said. If citizens would like a copy of the ordinance, they can ask a Shelby police officer for a copy or for more details.
Under Michigan State Law, “Any person of the age of 16 years or over assisting, aiding, abetting, allowing, permitting or encouraging any minor under the age of 16 years to violate the provisions of sections 1 and 2 hereof is guilty of a misdemeanor,” Karafa cited. Those assisting may also be subject to a misdemeanor citation.
“On another note, we have had a lot of complaints about dogs not being on leashes,” he said. “There is a state leash law, and someone may be cited if their dog is not on a leash.”
