GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A 25-year-old Battle Creek man was transported to a Grand Rapids hospital for serious injuries following a violent crash at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Saturday morning, April 8.

Brandon Latt McElhenie was unconscious when Good Samaritans found him after he crashed a 2017 Yahama UTV, which went airborne 24 feet before flipping over multiple times, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

“It was determined that the driver was north near the flats when he jumped his 2017 Yamaha UTV (utility task vehicle) over a small hill,” the report states. “The vehicle became airborne and traveled approximately 24 feet. The vehicle then impacted hard on its front end and flipped end-over-end before making second impact approximately 14 feet away. The vehicle then flipped once more before landing on its wheels and coming to rest approximately 32 feet away. The driver was originally unconscious when Good Samaritans arrived on scene.”

The Silver Lake State Park’s ORV area just opened for the 2017 season one week prior to the crash.
