LEAVITT TOWNSHIP — A garage at 9022 E. Clock Rd. was destroyed by a fire Wednesday, March 22, shortly after noon, but firefighters saved the family’s nearby house from major damage.
The garage, owned by Lee and Ashley Oomen, was insured, they said. Lee said he came home for lunch and discovered it was fully engulfed in flames. A neighbor had already called 911, Ashley said, just prior to Lee’s arrival.
No one was injured in the fire. Siding on the east side of the Oomens’ house melted from the intense heat of the burning garage.
Walkerville Assistant Fire Chief Al Purdy said the garage is totally destroyed.
Firefighters from Walkerville, Crystal Township and Hesperia battled the blaze. The Oceana County Sheriff’s Office was also on scene to assist.
Two “four-wheelers”, a wood splitter and other items inside the garage were destroyed, Ashley said. She speculated that a wood stove in the garage may have started the fire, but it was too early to determine the cause.
