GREENWOOD TOWNSHIP — William “Billy” Gort, Jr., has been identified as the 13-year-old Wyoming, Michigan boy who died following a hunting accident Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18, near East Cleveland Road and 192nd Avenue near Hesperia.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Hart Post responded to the scene of a “hunting accident” shortly before 4 p.m., according to an MSP press release issued Tuesday, Feb. 21.

“When troopers arrived at the scene, they discovered a 13-year-old boy from Wyoming, Michigan had been shot in the head while small game hunting. He was with two other hunters. The victim was transported to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon where he was later pronounced dead. The incident is still under investigation.”

According to the call to central dispatch, a bullet ricocheted and hit Billy in the head.

Billy, who was an avid hunter, was a student at Pinewood Middle School in the Kentwood school district. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help pay for Billy’s funeral expenses, https://www.gofundme.com/for-billy-gort.

The state police remain tight-lipped about releasing any further details about the incident.
