HART – The Michigan State University Extension Office will host the 2017 West Michigan Agricultural Employer Meeting, Feb. 14, at the Hart United Methodist Church, 308 South State St., from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This workshop aims to help producers meet farm labor and safety regulations.
Presenters will provide updates on new developments in labor law; pros and cons of different ways to obtain labor; the latest on migrant housing regulations; an update on the new I-9s and the Department of Homeland Security; and the pros and cons of transition to H2A.
The afternoon session will feature an update on what growers need to do to comply with the new Worker Protection Standards (WPS) and a discussion of respirator use on the farm under WPS. Free respirator fit tests that meet the new WPS standard will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Two RUP credits have been awarded. Growers interested in a fit test should promptly call the Hart MSU Extension office at 231-873-2129 for more information.
“Our West Michigan farm community produces high quality fruits and vegetables,” said Ben Werling, Michigan State University Extension educator. “My hope is that this meeting will equip our growers with knowledge of the latest changes in labor regulations, helping them to stay informed as they hire and manage the labor required to bring these products to market.”
The cost of the workshop is $25 before Thursday, Feb. 9, and $30 afterwards, and includes all conference materials, morning refreshments and lunch. The final deadline is Monday, Feb. 12.
