New Era man charged with arson.

HART — A 24-year-old New Era man faces up to 10 years in prison for allegedly using kerosene or some type of accelerant that set a house on fire in Newfield Township last month.

Daniel D. Guerra, of 2517 Yale Rd., Unit 1, was arrested Dec. 29 by the Hart post of the Michigan State Police for a felony of third-degree arson.

According to police, the incident was reported, Dec. 26, at 1:32 p.m. in the 2000 block of South Lakeview Drive. No one was injured.

The fire charred an exterior door area of the house, said Oceana County Prosecutor Joseph Bizon. Guerra was allegedly burning clothing, and then the flames caught the house fire, he said.

A conviction of third-degree arson is punishable to up to 10 years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine or three times the value of the property damaged, Bizon said.

A preliminary conference in 78th District Court is set for Jan. 9 at 3 p.m.

Guerra remains lodged in the Oceana County Jail on a $50,000/cash/surety bond.
