GRANT TOWNSHIP — A woman driving a 2005 Jeep Cherokee was transported by ambulance to Hackley Hospital in Muskegon for “non-life-threatening injuries” Thursday, Dec. 29, at approximately 4 p.m. after the Jeep crashed into the ditch on Oceana Drive, north of Clay Road, and caught fire, according to Oceana County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Hiddema.

The woman, whose age and hometown were not immediately available, was the sole occupant of the southbound vehicle, the deputy said. She was driving at a high rate of speed, according to initial dispatch information.

Shelby-Benona Fire Department was initially dispatched for its Jaws of Life equipment to extricate the woman from the Jeep, but Central Dispatch told the department to disregard because she was able to get out. The crash location was called in to dispatch as “north of Wesco,” but more specifically was north of Clay Road. Emergency crews temporarily closed Oceana Drive in between Clay and Cleveland roads.

Michigan State Police, New Era Police Department, Rothbury Police Department, and Oceana County EMS assisted at the scene.

A passerby called 911, Hiddema said. The crash remains under investigation, and more information will be provided when it is available.
