Student injured after ‘darting out’ in front of SUV.

SHELBY — A 15-year-old Shelby girl received facial injuries after she “darted out” in front of a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee early Thursday morning near the school campus, according to an Oceana County Sheriff’s Office accident report.

The girl received injuries to her face and mouth and was being treated at Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby, said Lt. Craig Mast.

According to the driver of the Jeep, who is a 27-year-old Shelby woman, and a school bus driver who witnessed the crash, the teen “darted out in front of her vehicle,” the report states. The driver told police she was unable to avoid a collision with the girl.

The bus driver said the Jeep was traveling approximately 10-15 mph when the girl “darted out in front” of the eastbound Jeep, and the crash was unavoidable.

The crash occurred on East Sixth Street, east of North Maple Street, at 7:35 a.m.

The driver and her passenger, who is an 8-year-old boy, were not injured.

Alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash.
