Judge Monton to retire.

HART — The Honorable Anthony A. Monton, the judge for the 27th Circuit Court, announced his retirement from the bench effective March 1, 2017.

The 27th Circuit Court encompasses Oceana and Newaygo counties. Judge Monton was first elected judge for the 27th Circuit Court in 1988 and took the bench in January of 1989. He was reelected in 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2012.

Serving as chief judge for many years for the circuit court, he was appointed in 2014 by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve as chief judge of all the trial courts within the circuit.

Before taking the bench, Monton worked in private practice for the firm of Urick and Monton and also served as the Oceana County prosecuting attorney.

The vacancy on the bench will be filled by appointment by the governor to serve out the term that expires January 1, 2019.
