PENTWATER — Hannah Harris, a 10-year-old Lansing girl, drowned after falling off a paddle board in Lake Michigan near Charles Mears State Park Monday, Sept. 19.
The drowning was a “terrible tragedy,” said Lt. Craig Mast of the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office. Hannah was not wearing a life vest.
“At 3:47 p.m., the Oceana County Sheriff’s Office, along with several other agencies, was
dispatched to the area of Lake Michigan beach approximately .75 mile north of Charles Mears State Park and Pentwater Pier to search for a missing 10-year-old girl who had fallen off a paddle board and was now missing,” states a press release from Mast. “While first responders were on the way to the scene, they were advised that the victim had been recovered at 4:20 p.m. Pentwater Police Officer Xander Schulz was the first on scene and began CPR at 4:23 p.m. Several other agencies responded to the scene to assist, although efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.”
Responding agencies include Pentwater Police, Pentwater Fire, Pentwater First Responders, Oceana EMS, Michigan DNR, State Police, Oceana County Sheriff and Oceana County Victim’s Assistance Advocates.
