Steven Jay Bruce, 62, of Hart, passed away Sunday, August 14, 2016 following a boating accident.

He was born January 6, 1954 in Swindon, England to Gordon and Ruth (Hawley) Bruce. He graduated from East Grand Rapids High School in 1972 and attended Michigan State University. On June 4, 1982, Steve married Connie Gebhart.

Steve is survived by his wife Connie; son Trenton (Amanda Sewell); sisters Susie Gordon (Gary Hessler), Laurie (Tim) Reminga, and Barbara Bruce; six nephews, two nieces, and two great-nieces; his parents-in-law, Gale and M. Lavonne (Ego) Gebhart and two sisters-in-law; his dog LiLu; and a large extended family and network of colleagues and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his daughter, Jessica Lauren Bruce in 2008.

Steve had been a real estate broker since age 23 and had many other business ventures. He was an active member of the Hart Rotary Club and the local Chamber of Commerce. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing. He will be remembered for his welcoming smile and for his acts of kindness that may have gone unnoticed by all except the countless recipients. He was a giver of joy and an instigator of fun to all who knew him.

A memorial service is scheduled for 4 p.m. on September 3 at the Hart Congregational United Church of Christ with the Rev. Shirley Heeg and the Rev. Dan Barnum-Steggerda officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Steven Jay Bruce Memorial may be made at any Fifth Third Bank branch.

Arrangements by Harris Funeral Home, Shelby.
