Man, 79, dies in 2-vehicle crash; woman, 77, critical.

GARFIELD TOWNSHIP, (Newaygo County) — A 79-year-old Newaygo man, who was a passenger in a pickup truck that crashed into a minivan Sunday afternoon Aug. 21, died, according to a press release from the Michigan State Police. The pickup driver, who is a 77-year-old Newaygo woman, was airlifted from the scene and remains in critical condition, according to MSP.

“Troopers from the Michigan State Police, Hart Post, were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on West 48th Street at South Croswell Avenue, Garfield Township, Newaygo County, on Sunday afternoon shortly after 12:30 p.m.,” the press release states. “Troopers arrived on scene and determined that a pickup truck with two occupants was driving north on South Croswell Avenue at West 48th Street when the driver failed to yield after stopping for a stop sign, crashing into a minivan with two occupants traveling east on 48th Street.

“The driver of the northbound vehicle, a 77-year-old Newaygo female, was injured in the crash and taken to Spectrum Hospital in Grand Rapids via Aeromed and listed in critical condition. The passenger of the northbound vehicle, a 79-year-old Newaygo male, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash.

“The driver of the eastbound vehicle, a 75-year-old Edmore male, was transported to Spectrum Hospital in Fremont via Life Ambulance and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger of the eastbound vehicle, a 73-year-old Edmore female, was transported to Spectrum Hospital in Fremont via Life Ambulance and was treated and released.

“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

“The crash is still under investigation at this time. Troopers were assisted at the scene by Newaygo County Sheriff’s Department, Life Ambulance, Fremont Police Department and Fremont Fire Department.”
