HART — A 48-year-old Macomb, Michigan man who police said accidentally shot himself in the hand when he was handling his 9 mm pistol while camping at the Jellystone Campground near Silver Lake July 3, was arraigned this week in 78th District Court on a misdemeanor charge of reckless use of firearms.

Alberto Urbano also allegedly fired off a second round into the bed in his camper, because he was upset about shooting himself, Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Craig Mast said.

“The injured man told deputies he did not think the gun was loaded when he shot himself across his left hand,” Mast said. “He then chose to fire off another round into the bed in the camper he was staying in, because he was upset that he just wounded himself.” He was transported to Hackley Lakeshore Hospital in Shelby by his camping companions.

According to the police report, alcohol was not a factor in the alleged shooting at the campground located at 8239 W. Hazel Rd. in Golden Township.

Urbano has a valid concealed pistol license, according to the police report. He is free on a $5,000/cash/surety/10 percent bond, and a pretrial is scheduled for Aug. 2 at 4 p.m.

The charge is punishable by 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine. “The court may suspend hunting privileges for up to three years,” his court file states.
