HART — The Oceana County Historical & Genealogical Society, located at 114 Dryden St., is open Tuesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. in July and August and every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for family history research.
The society has an extensive collection of microfilmed newspapers, a large Native American collection, a complete collection of the Mears Newz (the world’s largest, most continuously published newspaper), tens of thousands of obituaries, cemetery sexton records, family histories and more. The Master Index can be viewed on site, or online and, while constantly growing, currently includes over three-quarters of a million names and records associated with Ocean County.
The Oceana Historical Park and Museum, located at 5809 Fox Rd. in Mears, is open Saturdays and Sundays, June through August, from 1-4 p.m. There is no admission fee, but donations are appreciated. There are several buildings at the park, including the old town hall, the Lather’s House, Boynton Beach Cottage, Swedish Church, Transportation Museum and more. The Transportation Museum includes a large collection of antique cars and farm implements.
