Seven people were involved in a semi truck and two-car crash on southbound US 31 near Stony Lake Road Tuesday afternoon, July 5, that shut down the expressway, according to Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Craig Mast.

Police remained at the scene investigating the crash at 4 p.m. several hours after it occurred, Mast said.

“There were seven people involved with injuries ranging from minor to critical,” Mast said in an emailed statement to media at approximately 4 p.m.

A 25-year-old Ludington man driving an Apache Logistics semi truck received only minor “bumps and bruises,” Mast said at the scene. A Michigan State Police accident reconstructionist was dispatched to the scene.

Numerous rescue personnel were on scene, and US 31 was shut down in the vicinity of the crash scene. Traffic was backed up for miles on US 31 as motorists were being diverted off the expressway onto the Stony Lake Road off-ramp. Traffic was heavier than normal due to holiday travelers heading home after the long weekend.

More details will be provided as they are available.
