Life-threatening” injuries were reported in a major crash on southbound US 31 near Stony Lake Road Tuesday afternoon that shut down the expressway.

U.S. 31 crash 2A 25-year-old Ludington man driving an Apache Logistics semi truck received only minor “bumps and bruises,” said Oceana County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Craig Mast, who was at the scene. Those who were traveling in the other two cars involved in the crash suffered “life-threatening injuries,” Mast said. It was not immediately clear how many occupants were in the other two cars or how the crash occurred. Mast said he would have more information available later today.

A Michigan State Police accident reconstructionist was dispatched to the scene.

Numerous rescue personnel were on scene, and US 31 was shut down in the vicinity of the crash scene. Traffic was backed up for miles on US 31 as motorists were being diverted off the expressway onto the Stony Lake Road off-ramp. Traffic was heavier than normal due to holiday travelers heading home after the long weekend.
