GOLDEN TOWNSHIP — A 27-year-old Mears man who was arrested by Oceana County Sheriff’s deputies for brutally assaulting his ex-girlfriend last Saturday, Feb. 27, was arraigned Tuesday morning, March 1, in 78th District Court on a felony charge of assault by strangulation.

Jacob Allen Wilson, of 5215 W. Fox Rd., is also being charged as a habitual offender. He is lodged in the Oceana County Jail on a $50,000 cash/surety bond.

The violent attack that involved choking the victim nearly to the point of unconsciousness occurred in the 5500 block of West Cherry Court near Wilson’s General Store Saturday at 12:27 a.m., according to OCSO Lt. Craig Mast.

The victim, a 22-year-old Hart woman, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Shelby Lakeshore Hospital and released, Mast said.

“A young lady who had been residing there returned to the residence to pick up some of her belongings,” Mast said. “She was met by her estranged boyfriend. He invited her into the house and proceeded to assault her.”

The woman was assaulted by “multiple methods,” the lieutenant said, including strangulation. She was choked, punched and kicked several times, he said. The injuries the woman suffered corroborate her account, Mast said.

“She was strangled on several different occasions to the point where she would nearly pass out,” Mast said. “She was just barely able to maintain consciousness.”
