HART — The Girls on the Run program of District Health Department #10 is in need of volunteer coaches for the 2016 season.

Girls on the Run is a national program on a mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident while using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. This program is offered to third through sixth grade girls at participating schools.

The program runs an hour and a half two days a week after school for 10 weeks in the spring. Two coaches are needed for every team of 15 girls. “Coaches are the heart and soul of the Girls on the Run program, and we are always looking for people to become a part of this wonderful, inspiring program,” states a press release from the health department. “Without the commitment of coaches, the program is not possible.”

Coaches will be trained on how to use the researched-based curriculum and teaching materials. Our coaches come from a variety of backgrounds including: mothers, teachers, nurses or other community members that value physical fitness. You do not need to be a runner to be a coach.

The deadline for schools and coaches to sign up is Jan. 4, 2016. Schools and coaches who wish to become involved with this program, should contact Program Coordinator Shelby Thren at (231) 305-8642 or via email at sthren@dhd10.org.
