HART — The Bread of Life Food Pantry teamed up with the Healthy Families of Oceana County coalition (HFOC) to highlight healthy food choices on its shelves.
Healthy items were selected by Meryl Smith, a registered dietitian from District Health Department #10, and meet the following USDA nutrition guidelines:
– Low in saturated and trans fat;
– Low in sodium and cholesterol;
– Low in sugar;
– Good source of fiber/whole grains.
Pantry users can look for the HFOC labels to select healthy food options, such as canned and frozen fruits and vegetables, canned tuna and salmon, and whole grain bread and cereal products. The food pantry is a vital service to the community, and helps to ensure that all residents have the opportunity to put nutritious food on the table.
Bread of Life Food Pantry is located at 11 Washington Street in Hart, and is open to those in need each Wednesday from 3-5 p.m.
Other food pantries in Oceana County that are interested in participating in the project can contact Katie Miller at (231)-902-8539 or by email at kmiller@dhd10.org.
