BENONA TWP. — A pole barn fire Sunday evening, Sept. 20, at Son’s Disposal totally destroyed a garbage truck, said owner Larry Keeler.

“It looks like a ceiling fan caught on fire from what the firemen were telling me,” Keeler said. “And that caught the ceiling on fire which dripped down on one of our garbage trucks and totally burned our garbage truck up. We’ve got one still running, so we’re still doing our routes.”

Firefighters from five area departments quickly extinguished the fire, saving the building.

No one was injured in the blaze, said Shelby-Benona Fire Chief Jack White. In addition to Shelby-Benona, firefighters from Grant Township, Ferry Township, Hart and Hesperia were called to the scene, White said.

“Someone saw smoke coming from the eaves and called the fire department,” White said.
